The literature in psychology and education was canvassed to assess the frequency of usage of the 2 × c ordered categorical design It was used with 149 data sets in 29 journals from 1992–1995. There was a statistically significant decline in the usage of the 2 × c design as the number of ordered categorical levels increased. This raises the question of why researchers eschew measurement of more refined categories of change.
