First-grade children were given three training trials on a simple guessing task and then extinguished. The pattern of reward which Ss expected significantly affected their resistance to extinction. The extent to which their expectations were discontinued did not have a significant effect on their resistance to extinction. It is concluded that, in the present situation, the child's resistance to extinction is unaffected by the pattern of reward received.
