The interaction between arousal and sensory reinforcement upon operant behavior of 240 24- to 36-hr.-old chicks was investigated as a function of visual complexity and duration of light onset. The results reconfirmed the findings that light onset was reinforcing for chicks and that visual complexity magnified its reinforcing potential. Furthermore, duration was viewed as having an additive effect. The results were described in terms of an activation hypothesis.
