Supporting the re-emergence of interest in consequences to offspring involved with maternal alcohol consumption, a warning of potential confounding in studies was sounded. Reduced litter size and maternal destruction of offspring in rodents were noted to typify such studies. Use of surviving alcohol-exposed offspring may produce artifactual effects.
