Despite similarity on two estimates of severity of their asthma (frequency and duration of intravenous therapy during hospitalization and pulmonary function measures taken on non-IV days), patients who missed scheduled medications frequently and who requested PRNs infrequently were hospitalized for fewer days than others. The results suggest that patients' characteristics associated with medication-use patterns may be critical variables influencing medical decisions.
