13 pairs of sixth graders were selected such that within each pair, students were matched on verbal and non-verbal IQs but differed greatly on academic success self-concept and self-esteem scores. Mean academic achievement in reading, language, and mathematics for the students with high self-concepts was not significantly different from that for the students with low self-concepts.
