Attitude toward Equal Rights Amendment Scale: An Objective Measurement Tool of Attitudes toward Equal Rights Legislation

One of the most recent controversial topics concerns the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). There is, however, no objective instrument currently available to measure directly attitudes toward such legislation. This study developed such an instrument. The newly developed instrument was administered to 282 men and women who ranged in age from 15 to 76 yr. and were from rural, suburban, and urban environments. Women were significantly more favorable in attitudes toward the ERA than men. Age was a reliable predictor of attitude toward the ERA for women, older women being less favorable.
