When asked to rank attributes of interpersonal attraction, people typically place physical attractiveness below many other qualities. Yet when the opportunity arises, they choose to interact with physically attractive others. Social exchange theory suggests that this behavior is quite reasonable since the assessment cost of physical attractiveness is minimal.
