Abstract
Acoustic rhinometry, a method to describe the geometry in the nasal cavity and the epipharynx, is based on reflection of an acoustic signal entered into the nasal cavity. This can be used to evaluate the cross-sectional area of the nasal cavity as a function of the distance from the nostril. The method has proved to be a potent tool in characterizing the geometry of the nasal cavity because of the direct access to the cavity, because it requires little cooperation from the subject, and it is noninvasive. By clinical examples it will be shown that the method can be used to monitor in an objective and dynamic way the effect of various principles of treatment procedures on pathological processes in the nasal cavity and the epipharynx.
