An account is given of 3 years' experience with 126 adolescents in a 16 bed in-patient unit.
Diagnostic categories, length of stay, screening and assessment techniques, staffing and facilities are described. Particular emphasis is given to a discussion of family process and structure in the assessment and treatment of individual children and in the design and modalities of overall management.
The aim of the unit is to become a model of the family for each child or adolescent, a model which, through the medium of group behaviour enables nuclear conflicts to be clarified and related to the roles and functions in the family of origin.
