Iodine-Induced Submandibular Sialadenitis in the Hamster

Summary

Administration of large amounts of potassium iodide to the hamster leads to an inflammatory reaction in the submandibular glands, but not in the parotid or sublingual structures. The primary site of damage is the distal duct system. Such selective damage by this agent may be related to the greater concentrating ability of iodine by the submandibular glands in contrast to the parotids and sublinguals.
