Effect of Hypochloremia on Cerebrospinal Fluid Chloride Concentration In a Patient with Anorexia Nervosa and in Dogs

Summary

The human and animal data presented suggest that chloride may be actively transported into the cerebrospinal fluid from plasma against a concentration gradient. The data obtained from the patient further suggest that in states of hypochloremia the CSF chloride concentration decreases as the cerebrospinal fluid moves away from the site of production, presumably secondary to equilibration with the low plasma chloride levels.
