Summary
Using a viral interference test BS-C-1 cells (a stable grivet monkey kidney line) were found to be as sensitive as the suckling mouse for the assay of mouse adapted prototype strains of all available serotypes of dengue virus. Two other stable cell lines PS (pig kidney) and LLC MK 2 (stable rhesus kidney), while not as susceptible to all dengue serotypes as BS-C-1, showed CPE to dengue 2 and TH-36. Two primary cell cultures, MKC and HKC, were not susceptible to all dengue viruses, while a strain of HeLa cells gave no evidence of development of interference following inoculation of dengue viruses. Applications of the tissue culture interference test are discussed.
