Aberrant Animals Showing Disparate Liver and Kidney β-Glucuronidase Activities in a Genetic Study. ∗

Summary

In the course of a study of the inheritance of liver and kidney β-glucuronidase and acid phosphatase activities, animals aberrant with regard to β-glucuronidase were observed. Thus, 2.7% of the animals in the F2 and 7.1% of those in the F1-backcross to recessive generations exhibited liver β-glucuronidase levels characteristic of the “high” β-glucuronidase parental strain A/Jax while their kidney values were in the “low” category, typical of the C3H/Heston parents. On the other hand, the inheritance of acid phosphatase proceeded independently of that for β-glucuronidase. It is suggested that these aberrant animals may reflect the segregation of multiple alleles governing hormonal levels and probably also the alteration in hormonal status due to crowding.
