Summary

Viable and heat-killed dentogingival bacterial plaque was injected into the skin of normal and leukopenic rabbits. Increased levels of various lysosomal hydrolases (acid protease, β-glucuronidase and acid phosphatase) were demonstrated in lesions taken from normal animals, but, in general, not from leukopenic rabbits. It was suggested that tissue injury may be mediated by the release of lysosomal enzymes from degenerating PMN-leukocytes.
