Reversible Inhibition of Thyroidal Uptake of 131 I by Dimethyl Sulfoxide ∗

Summary

Dimethyl sulfoxide, in sufficient concentration, inhibited uptake of ¹³¹I by mouse thyroids in vitro. Both active transport and organification of ¹³¹I appeared to be affected. The inhibitory effect was readily reversed by washing the thyroids in saline. In vivo, a slight, transient, depression of ¹³¹I thyroidal uptake was found.
