Partition of Lipids between Chylomicrons and Chylomicron-Free Lymph of the Dog Fed Corn Oil with or without Cholesterol ∗

Summary

Dogs were fed for 2 days skim milk formulas containing corn oil with or without added cholesterol. Chylomicrons and chylomicron-free lymph, as well as plasma, were examined for triglyceride, phospholipid, and free and esterified cholesterol. None of the plasma lipids nor the triglyceride or phospholipid of chylomicrons or chylomicron-free lymph showed significant changes as a result of cholesterol feeding. The cholesterol content of lymph chylomicrons increased much more than that of the chylomicron-free lymph. In the chylomicron fraction of the cholesterol-fed animals, the esterified cholesterol was primarily responsible for the increase in cholesterol content, whereas in the chylomicron-free lymph, free and esterified cholesterol increased equally.
