Conclusion
The corneal edema and opacity resulting from intra-ocular injection of the virus of western equine encephalomyelitis in domestic rabbits occurs only in response to large amounts of virus. It appears to be analogous to the ocular response to influenza virus, which has been attributed to toxic properties of the virus. An entirely similar ocular reaction has been induced by injection of equine encephalomyelitis virus of the eastern type. Limited growth of equine encephalomyelitis virus may occur in the eye but is not a significant factor in the described reaction.
