On the influence of different operating conditions on the level of external ice forces on the propeller-shaft system of a single-screw ship

The article presents the test results of an investigation on propeller ice loads of a single-screw arctic cargo ship-model. The ice model tests were carried out in the Wärtsilä Ice Model Basin in Helsinki in cooperation with the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute, Leningrad. By using a propeller dynamometer manufactured by the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute, the propeller torque and the bending moment on the propeller shaft were measured in different realistic ice conditions. Some comparisons are made with full-scale measurements on a single-screw cargo ship. The test results characterize the level and frequency of ice loads on the ship propeller shaft when operating in various ice conditions.
