Abstract
Flux-linkage l is effectively an incompletely defined variable, defined with respect to magnitude but not with respect to polarity. The paper proposes a polarity convention for flux-linkage l, enabling the sign of the induced voltage u to be determined without resorting to ‘physical considerations’.
