The synthesis of benzimidazoles and benzoxazoles by the condensation reaction of o-phenylenediamines and o-aminophenols with S-methylisothioamide hydroiodides on silica gel under microwave irradiation, and also in solvent under reflux, is reported.

Ab initio HF/6-31G* and MP2/6-31G*//HF/6-31G* methods were used to calculate the relative energies of the important energy-minimum conformations and transition-state geometries of (Z,E,Z)-cyclonona-1,3,5-triene; the calculated energy barrier for ring inversion of the twist–chair (C₁) conformation is 29.35 kJ/mol, while the barrier for swivelling of the trans double bond through the polymethylene bridge is 59.76 kJ/mol.

A new ceramide 1, has been isolated along with a known compound 3,6-diacetoxy-cholest-7-en-3β,5α,6β-triol (2) from a marine sponge Fasciospongia cavernosa collected off the Mandapam coast in the Gulf of Manner, India. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by spectroscopic analysis.

An efficient synthetic method is reported in which 2-arylbenzoxazoles have been prepared in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions by the palladium-catalysed carbonylation of diaryliodonium salts with o-aminophenols followed by dehydrative cyclisation.

Nickel oxide thin films form and grow when Nickel foils are exposed to an inductively coupled low pressure oxygen plasma. The resulting oxide (NiO) is identified by near-grazing X-ray diffraction and by FTIR specular reflectance spectroscopy methods. The thickness of the NiO layer increases with exposure time.

The molybdenum complex of C₇₀, [Mo(ẽ²-C₇₀)(CO)₂(phen)(dbm)] (1) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, dbm = dibutyl maleate) has been synthesised by heating a solution of C₇₀ with [Mo(CO)₂(phen)(dbm)₂] in toluene followed by chromatography over silica gel and the crystal structure has been determined.

The syntheses and crystal structures of two novel Tröger's bases as candidates for frequency up-coverted organic materials are reported.

Ferrocene carboxylic acid was reacted with DCC in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature to give N,N′-dicyclohexyl-O-ferrocenoylisourea, which can be converted to N,N′-dicyclohexyl-N-ferrocenoylurea in dioxane at reflux temperature.

The synthesis, and X-ray crystal and molecular structures, of 1-phenacyl-4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium chloride and bromide monohydrates are described.

Bis([2.2]metacyclophane) bipyridinium was synthesized for the first time and it was found that this cyclophane compound was reduced at more negative potentials than the corresponding bipyridinium, having no cyclophane skeleton, due to a transannular CH–p interaction between the aromatic ring of the cyclophane and CH portion next to nitrogen atom.
