The Bible is rigorously realistic in its representations of human character, the conditions and contingencies of life in this world. Therefore the aim of Old Testament preaching is to invite Christians to grow toward spiritual maturity in circumstances that are always less than ideal. Preaching Old Testament characters and preaching psalms may enable both preacher and hearers to enter into the biblical story in ways that open up a complex and faithful moral vision.

The life of Professor Norman Porteous spanned three centuries (1898-2003). He preserved letters and cards sent him over 83 years from many distinguished correspondents in academic and public life. His studies in Germany and ties with German scholars were very important to him; and their letters constitute an important primary resource of mid-20^th century activity and thought. In this article, these letters are considered in their wider context.

We often do not know how to pray, especially when we are faced with overwhelming questions, blatant injustice or likely disaster. The book of Habakkuk can profitably be seen as a prayer guide, especially for such times. As we draw alongside Habakkuk through the twists and turns of his prayer journey we find a model to inspire our own.
