This paper outlines the major developments that have taken place during the last three years in the design of microcomputer system components. The emphasis is on the ways in which the continuing increases in device integration levels have been used to improve the quality of microprocessor components. In addition consideration is given to how the implementation of ‘software on silicon’ is starting to affect component design.

Master-chip gate arrays are becoming an accepted means of producing small quantities of special integrated circuits for research and project duties. This paper considers the adoption of novel logic configurations, termed universal-logic-modules, the particular advantages of which will be discussed in this paper.

Uncommitted logic arrays or gate arrays provide a fast and cost-effective means of producing digital L.S.I, circuits. Their increasing popularity has created a need for engineers who are skilled in this new technology. Students on a one-year M.Sc. course are able to gain practical experience of logic design using gate arrays and are motivated by the opportunity to characterise and test the finished product.

The UMIST semiconductor device manufacturing facility, set up, primarily, to make possible the familiarisation of undergraduate and postgraduate students with many of the fundamental processes in microelectronic technology, is described. The range of activities currently undertaken is outlined, and the direction of future development indicated.

Teaching of integrated circuit engineering in New Zealand initially involved establishment of a Thick Film Hybrid Microelectronics Laboratory. Students now gain ‘hands-on’ experience using high quality equipment and processing standards which ensure commercially viable results, leading to increased confidence and satisfaction. Course structure is illustrated with typical projects.

Recent advances in VLSI digital circuit design methods and the silicon foundry concept has put the design of such circuits within reach of students. This paper discusses the design of linear integrated circuits by students. The basic concepts, tools and techniques are reviewed. The areas of common ground and differences between analogue and digital design techniques are highlighted.

The assembly of a simple twisted nematic liquid crystal display test cell is described and an account is given of some investigations that may be undertaken using it. Details for making a working seven-segment display are given.
