In an attempt to apply quality principles to a course of lecture, tutorial and laboratory classes, BS5750, an industrial standard, translated into course requirements and “customers“ are identified. A service specification and a quality system are developed and an example of course design using this approach is provided.

This paper gives a comprehensive overview of the variety of research and developmental activities for computer-based education which is carried out in the Department of Electrical Engineering at The University of Sydney, particular emphasis being placed on the research and development of computer-based training programs for undergraduate electrical engineering students.

In a recent survey at Napier University, the students favoured increased use of computers in the teaching of electronics. The survey suggested the need for and has led to the designing of a new more computer-biased three-year B. Sc. degree course in electronics. The paper summarises the results of the survey.

This paper looks at the two most commonly used artificial intelligence programming languages, LISP and PROLOG. The differences between conventional programming and symbolic computing and between LISP and PROLOG are presented. Some comparisons between code in PASCAL, LISP and PROLOG are given.

Variational procedures, energy expressions and the minimum energy principle are often difficult steps to introduce in advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Electrical Engineering. A simple preamble, relying only on a basic circuit analogy, can be used to overcome these difficulties and is presented here.

A method is presented for generating the Gaussian density and distribution functions. These functions are generated in a novel way, using a simple structure to first generate the Gaussian density and then integrating this function to generate the distribution function.

We discuss the approximation max (x, y) ≈ x + y for x, y > 0, which is found to be useful in obtaining simple and transparent approximate solutions and interpretations for analytically complicated problems.

An attempt is made in this paper to bring the finite element method to a wider audience of undergraduate and graduate students through an approach that focuses on the design of the preprocessor, the solver and the postprocessor. Typical Fortran code is cited to illustrate the elegance of the method.

This paper uses generalized machine theory to develop an equivalent circuit model of a three phase induction motor comprised of two independently housed stator windings with one stator housing moveable, and a single squirrel-cage rotor whose bars extend the full length of the two stators.
