The Psalms invite various levels of interpretation. Both expressive and formative, they not only mirror reality but also tutor persons in the spiritual life.

The rhetoric of eschatology was formative of early Christian spirituality. Through such discourse the New Testament writers reshaped the community's perception of time and space, and enabled their audiences to “learn Christ.”

The text is more than the sum of its grammatical and historical parts. All but lost in modern exegesis is an experiential dimension that only a poetic reading can discern.

Challenged to respond to Nazi heresy and to offer practical assistance to persecuted Jews, Christians who were caught in the crucible of the Third Reich learned to read the Bible differently. After Auschwitz, we are still learning from their example.

The Bible helps us discern our vocation. Biblical spirituality, in turn, helps us discern God's inner promptings.
