Feasibility of parents promoting fruit-infused water to reduce preschool children’s sugar-sweetened beverage consumption

[GQ4]Adolescents tend to explore their dietary environment without prior consideration of their nutritional needs. This attitude is due to low nutrition knowledge and it contributes to micronutrient deficiency such as anaemia. The study aims to investigate the effect of nutrition education and counselling on dietary iron intake and iron status of early adolescents.
One hundred and twenty-six early adolescents will be recruited and randomized to receive nutrition education (intervention group) and no nutrition education (control group) in the Asante-Akim South Municipality of Ghana. Data on socio-demographics, dietary factors, dietary intake, knowledge of iron and anaemia will be collected at baseline and post-intervention. Blood samples will be collected for haemoglobin, ferritin and c-reactive protein analyses. The primary outcome measures include haemoglobin and ferritin levels, secondary outcomes such as dietary iron intake, dietary vitamin C intake and knowledge level of iron will be assessed at pre-and post-intervention (6 months). The study will comply with the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) for randomized trials.
The effectiveness of iron dietary guidelines developed will serve as a manual to aid, prevent and manage iron deficiency anaemia as well as reduce the prevalence of anaemia in the long term in Ghana.

High plasma cholesterol levels, mainly low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL) is a widely recognized major risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). According to epidemiologic studies’ findings, people from the Mediterranean countries have lower CHD rates than other countries; in these countries the usual diet is high in olive oil. The present study compares the effects of a cholesterol-enriched diet with or without adding olive oil on serum lipoproteins, lipid peroxidation, and atherosclerosis development.

Both dietary fibres significantly reduced the VAS scores of hunger, prospective food consumption and desire to eat, and increased satiety compared with the control group. However, the area under curve data for the VAS scores did not exhibit a significant difference. Significant reductions in EI and anthropometric values between the first and fifth week measures were observed in both dietary fibre groups. Statistically significant changes occurred in the body weight [-1.25 (1.27) kg], body mass index [-0.41 (0.42) kg/m2], waist circumference [-1.25 (1.04) cm] and waist/hip ratio [-0.01(0.01)] in the β-glucan group, whereas a statistically significant change occurred in body fat percentage in the inulin group [-2.16% (7.49)].
Overall, these findings demonstrate that the participants consuming β-glucan over the course of the five weeks had less EI, felt less hunger and had more satiety.

We investigated Na+ and potassium (K+) intakes and their correlates in a multi-ethnic Caribbean population.
Volunteers completed a self-administered questionnaire comprising socio-demographic items, physical activity (PA) and a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Foods eaten were classified by level of processing using the NOVA classification system and analysed for Na+ and K+ levels using appropriate dietary analysis software.
