We regret that in our Commentary for April last we gave the impression that the soldiers concerned in our paragraph on the use of handcuffs were members of the Royal Military Police. They had, in fact, no connexion with that Corps. One of our contributors, himself an officer of the Royal Military Police, remarks: “I can only say that during my time as a military police unit commander, because of our infrequent use of handcuffs, I have been required to ensure that holdings have not become inoperable through lack of maintenance”. He also makes the point that members of his Corps are only authorized to carry truncheons on infrequent and special occasions.

Constable Turner was seconded from his force to assist as an Outward Bound instructor. Prior to joining the Service in December 1963, he accompanied Sir John Hunt on an expedition to Greece.
