The economic backdrop of most nations remains dominated by family businesses. Family control is common in publicly traded Indian companies. Such controlling families often hold large shareholdings and for the most part have representation at the top management level as well as on the board. Consequently, an overarching question that emerges is whether and how family ownership, management, and governance affect corporate performance.

This article attempts to discern the relationship between family involvement in business (FIB) and financial performance (FP) of companies included in the S&P BSE 500 Index during the period 2006–2010. In addition, an attempt has been made to examine the difference in accounting and market measures of FP for family companies (FCs) vis-à-vis non-family companies (NFCs). A two-way fixed-effects panel model was used to examine the FIB–FP relationship with fixed effects being dummy variables for each year of the sample and dummy variables for each two-digit National Industrial Classification (NIC) code. Finally, to test for the ‘reverse causation’ between FIB and FP, the instrumental-variable—two-stage least-squares (IV-2SLS) regression was applied.

The results confirm that FCs are a predominant form over a number of industries in a large sample, S&P BSE 500 Index. In addition, founding families are often involved in the actual management of the companies. Controlling for company-specific, industry affiliation, and corporate governance variables, the cross-sectional longitudinal analyses show that FIB is associated with superior FP. Furthermore, FP is higher for FCs vis-à-vis NFCs. Based on the market performance measure, FC appear to be better performers with higher outside board representations. On further analysis of the profile of independent directors, it was observed that they had a diverse background and expertise. The impact of firm size and unaffiliated blockholdings on FP was found to be significantly negative. Finally, the estimates from the IV-2SLS were found to be consistent with the preliminary results that FIB is associated with better FP.

This article joins the evolving concurrence on the diversity and heterogeneity of family businesses by differentiating between family-owned, family-managed, and family-governed companies. It distinguishes itself from previous studies on the subject, as it uses different typologies based on the extent of FIB as well as presents multiple theoretical perspectives rather than a mono-theoretical view to empirical findings in the present study. Keeping this distinction in perspective is imperative for family business researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Since the existence of organization, organizational knowledge has been managed more informally than in formal ways. This was done through a knowledge supporting culture, by trusting and managing the employees. This was possible due to the small size of the organizations and co-location of employees. However, increasing global competition and growth of marketplaces have created a competitive incentive among many companies to consolidate and reconcile their knowledge assets as a means of creating value that is sustainable over time. In such a scenario, a need was felt to formally manage knowledge by developing capabilities.

The objective of this research article is to explore the knowledge management (KM) capabilities in large Indian organizations and their impact on knowledge effectiveness. It is based on the premise that together the perspectives of KM infrastructure and KM processes provide a useful theoretical foundation for defining important aspects of knowledge effectiveness in organizations. Knowledge management capabilities are explored with respect to infrastructure, structure, and culture. Knowledge management processes comprise creation/acquisition, storage, dissemination, and application. This research has found evidence that large Indian organizations have started realizing the importance of managing knowledge as a strategic asset. However, the approach is different in different organizations. Some organizations rely more on creating knowledge infrastructure capabilities through culture and structure while others equally emphasize the need of process approach to manage both tacit and explicit knowledge within the organization. KM effectiveness is defined in terms of improved communication, enhanced collaboration, improved employee skills, better decision-making, and improved productivity.

Data collected from 156 organizations was subject to structural equation modelling. The results established that both infrastructure capabilities and process capabilities play an important role in improving KM effectiveness.

This article examines the impact of open market share repurchase announcements on stock returns in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The main objective is to examine whether share repurchase announcements under the open market route have any significant impact on the returns of the stocks traded in the BSE. The article covers the period from 2009 to 2013. For sample selection, two criteria were used: first, the firm should have been listed in the BSE for at least 28 trading days before the repurchase announcement date, and second, the firm should have all relevant data required by this study. A total of 95 repurchase announcements fulfilled these criteria. The analysis period extended from –28 to +28 trading days relative to the repurchase announcement date (t = 0). The findings of the study will help us to understand how the market responds to share repurchase announcements in India and whether a firm actually benefits by repurchasing its own shares from the market.

This study uses a standard event methodology based on an ordinary least squares market model with the aim of finding out whether repurchase announcements generate any abnormal return around the repurchase announcement date. While applying the market model for estimating the abnormal returns, the regression is estimated based on the stock return of the firm and market return of the previous 120 trading days. So, here the estimation window takes into account 120 observations. Using this, the expected returns are generated and then the abnormal returns are derived for the event window, 28 days prior to the event date and 28 days after the event date.

The findings of the study indicate that share repurchase announcements do not necessarily generate abnormal stock returns in the Indian equity market unlike developed economies like the US, Canada, and Australia. The whole sample is further divided into various subsamples on the basis of firm size and size of repurchase. The subsample analyses reveal that smaller firms do not necessarily experience higher abnormal stock returns following repurchase announcements than that of the larger firms. The findings weakly support the view that larger repurchase size generates greater abnormal stock returns than the smaller ones.

This article addresses two main questions: Does a value premium exist in emerging market like India? If so, how pervasive is it in different market conditions? Value premium is assumed to be the difference in stock returns of undervalued and overvalued firms with a unique industry profile.

The sample for the study consisted of 32 companies from the Information Technology (IT) sector, the stocks of which had traded continuously in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) during the period 2000–2010. Prowess and Capitaline constitute the sources for the firm-level financial data, and NSE web sources provide data related to share prices and market capitalization.

The study involved a two-step empirical procedure: an exploratory factor analysis and a regression modelling under Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method. Exploratory factor analysis identified earnings growth and Earnings Price (E/P) rate as the prime determinants of stock returns. Expected earnings growth significantly explained E/P rate under OLS regression framework. The study then estimated normal E/P rate for the individual stock and compared the same with the actual E/P. If the actual E/P for a particular stock was greater than its estimated E/P, it was inferred that the stock was undervalued, the reverse being the case for overvaluation.

The findings of this research provide empirical validity of use of E/P rate in identifying mispriced stocks in the Indian context. Undervalued stocks can produce better returns compared to overvalued stocks, and their success has been both persistent and impressive. E/P rate or P/E ratio is a valuable analytic device when properly interpreted. The publicly available E/P rate seems to possess information content and warrants an investor’s attention at the time of his portfolio formation or revision. The search process involving E/P rate suggests that the best buy would be the stock whose reported earnings per share is expected to grow most rapidly.
