Gene and Cell Therapy in China: Highlighting Excellence in the 21st Century 中国的基因与细胞治疗： 21世纪的飞跃发展和重要贡献

On the occasion of the Chinese New Year, we are proud to present a special issue on gene and cell therapy in China, guest-edited by two of China's prominent scientific leaders in the field of gene and cell therapy, Professor De-Pei Liu and Professor Yuquan Wei. Along with this collection of commentaries, reviews, and original articles, we also seek to highlight areas of excellence among the translational gene and cell therapy research community in the world's most populous nation where sciences and technologies are being developed at an unprecedented speed.

值此中国农历新年之际, 我们很荣幸能在《人类基因治疗》杂志上发表本期由刘德培教授和魏宇全教授这两位中国基因和细胞治疗领域的领军人物客串主编的中国特刊。在本特刊中, 我们不仅收集了一系列的评论, 综述和原创研究文章, 同时, 我们还力求重点介绍这个世界上人口最多而科学和技术正在以前所未有的速度飞跃发展的国家在基因和细胞治疗转化研究领域里所取得的成就和重要贡献。

Historically, a number of obstacles have impeded effective communication and exchange between Chinese and Western scientific communities. The differences in both spoken and written language are formidable. At times, the unfamiliarity of Western scientific audiences to well-renowned Chinese investigators and institutions hinders appreciation of the context from which these works arise. Our efforts in presenting this perspective stem from our ongoing commitment to evaluate all gene and cell therapy sciences around the world in an equitable manner.

纵观科学技术的发展史, 许多因素, 尤其是双方在口语和书面文字方面上存在的巨大差异, 影响了中西方科技界的有效沟通和交流 。很多时候, 西方科学界对中国著名科学家和研究单位的陌生感也会阻碍他们进一步了解产生相关科研成果的工作和背景。我们组织这期中国特刊的努力是源于我们一直所致力的目标 - 以公平的方式来评估和发表来自世界各地的基因和细胞治疗研究。

It is our sincere hope to offer this special issue as a bridge of understanding between the East and the West, with special commentaries intended to explain the strengths and accomplishments of major research centers and investigators in China. In addition, we have provided a sampling of reviews and original research articles representing work from some of these excellent investigative groups. We encourage our readers to use the special commentaries to help orient themselves to the landscape of gene therapy and cell research in China and to appreciate the value of data presented within these original contributions. Our field is engaged in important work, and it is our shared responsibility to access all of the intellectual power available to our global community in the pursuit of solving the countless therapeutic challenges that lie ahead.
