June Is Lipedema Awareness Month
Lipedema Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness worldwide about the critical need for research, diagnostics, treatments, and a cure. Lipedema is one of many forms of edema. In medical terminology, “edema” means “swelling.” For people living with lipedema, the swelling is caused by an overgrowth of adipocytes that are normally found in a layer of the skin. These cells grow abnormally in size and number, causing pain, bruising, and limited mobility. The cause of lipedema remains unknown, and no diagnostic tests are available. LE&RN urges the lymphatic community to elevate lipedema as a global priority.
