Abstract

Planetary health omics is a new field that expands the boundaries and tools of its predecessor fields public health genomics and global health. Planetary health omics has been featured in many articles in OMICS over the past several years, and builds upon the rise of planetary health (Horton et al., 2014), the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the introduction of digital technologies to systems science.
Planetary health omics has a strong emphasis on the concept of One Health (Andoh et al., 2023; Destoumieux-Garzón et al., 2018), and ecological, digital, and political determinants of public health in the current era of compound crises from climate emergency, extreme digital transformation, biopolitics, and post-truth (Özdemir, 2019; Yetiskin, 2022). Planetary health omics also calls for abolition of knowledge silos and breaking down the barriers among ecology, veterinary medicine, and environmental and medical sciences.
The intersections of One Health and planetary health omics invite integrative biology questions that extend beyond anthropocentrism, traditional development discourse and neoclassical growth economics, the current dominant and uncritically accepted master narratives in systems science and data science, so the often neglected linkages between human health, animal, plant, and ecological health can be diligently taken into account (Escobar, 1992; Özdemir and Springer, 2022). Planetary health omics as a new field of inquiry in systems science is relevant and timely going forward with COVID-19 as an endemic disease (Katzourakis, 2022), and for both communicable and noncommunicable chronic diseases.
