Abstract

Booth Welsh Wins Siemens Award Again
Booth Welsh (Companion Company) (www.boothwelsh.co.uk), which provides process design, control and instrumentation, systems integration, electrical and asset management services, has celebrated receiving Siemens’ ‘Going the Extra Mile Award’ recently at the company’s Partner Conference. This is a win for Booth Welsh for the second year running.
Malcolm Todd, Siemens Solution Partner Manager UK, commented, I’m pleased to present Booth Welsh with this special partners’ award for the second year running. It is the first time we have had a partner winning an award two years consecutively. This partner award focuses on supporting Siemens under particularly difficult circumstances. The criteria for the accolade were wide-ranging, including not only technical competence but also the ability to deliver complex projects, customer management and working in partnership with Siemens. Booth Welsh has been a strong supporting partner with us for over 15 years and the winning of this award is testament to that.
Gavin Florence, Systems Director, Booth Welsh, said, As a company, we are delighted to be recognised by Siemens for this award. It reflects our continued success in increasing our Siemens project portfolio and working hard for our clients to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
He continued, The winning of this award is down to the overall efforts of our highly skilled and trained expert staff who are able to identify potential problems and resolve any issues quickly. We look forward to continued co-operation with Siemens on a variety of projects.
Booth Welsh is an engineering services company based in Ayrshire, Scotland, that operates globally to provide services to blue chip clients across a broad spectrum of business and industry.
Study Shows Higher Intelligence Needed to Open Sensor Growth Opportunities
A new study by Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.sensors.com) has found that seamless integration, increased intelligence and diagnostic capabilities are key challenges in the sensors market. The report finds that as new production plants are ultra modern and complicated, smartness and seamless integration at the device, subsystem and system level is necessary to ensure continuous high performance in the automation space.
Frost & Sullivan finds in the study – entitled Global Sensor Outlook – 2013 – that in 2012 the global sensors and transmitters market generated revenue of £39.6 billion and estimates this to increase to £58.5 billion by 2016.
With evolution of technology and need for greater control, optimal resource use and integrated solutions that enable cost reduction are vital. Meeting this challenge requires in-depth understanding and commitment of technical and commercial resources from sensor manufacturers.
Sensors & Instrumentation Principal Analyst Dr Rajender Thusu commented, Consistent high-quality customer service is a key element, especially with constant technology up-gradation and continuous product innovations on the horizon. Sensor companies that monitor the changing market pulse and meet client needs will see success.
Evolving sensor features that have been developed for dynamic customer needs include soft sensors, self-calibration, auto-correction and wireless communication for monitoring and control applications.
‘With an increased level of accuracy, the reliance on sensors is growing in most end-user applications as never before’, said Dr Thusu.
In fact, sensors are experiencing unprecedented penetration into industrial, commercial, consumer and service sectors. These target markets have well-entrenched market participants that exhibit continuous commitment through product development, innovation, and a perennial customer service approach to stay ahead.

One feature is revamped navigation designed around the way users access the site and brings forward UK specific content. Also featured is an enhanced and simplified membership area where users can manage how the company updates them about what is important. UK social media such as the Twitter feed and UK blog material are also easier to access on the site.
The new site provides easy access to the full suite of Rockwell Automation products and technologies, its solutions, services, training, events, qualifications and strategic partnerships. It also features the expanded news and innovation section and a growing catalogue of downloadable guides, resources and customer case studies.
UK Director Gareth Dean said, A lot of work has gone into the ‘back-end’ of the refreshed UK website to ensure it has local relevance to our UK users as part of a global resource and we’re thrilled with the results which have made the site richer in content and simpler to use. It will provide a perfect platform for Rockwell Automation solutions in an ever expanding digital environment however our customers and communities interact with it.
App Helps with Choosing Electric Motors
New from Schneider Electric is an iPad app designed to help industrial sector specifiers to easily choose low-voltage motor starters. The app complements the company’s TeSys controlgear products range and has been designed to make the motor starter selection process far easier for anyone involved in motor starter selection or specification.
For users unsure of the product they need, the app proposes different solution options. By using a series of selection filters, it will clearly present a choice of product combinations to enable the most suitable one for each application to be quickly selected.
Alternatively, by simply refining the selection criteria, a single solution can be established, perfectly suited to the starter requirements. The app also enables users to create part lists for all starters required in a project that can be exported via email, streamlining the specification process.
iPad app from Schneider Electric
The iPad app is free to download and enables customers to refine search parameters depending on their requirements, ensuring that they select the right motor starter for the job. A PC version is also available for free download from www.schneider-electric.co.uk.

News in Brief
Industrial 20-port managed Gigabit Ethernet switch
Products in the ORing IGS-9848GPF/IGS-9844GPF series are equipped with eight Gigabit ports and four sets/eight sets of fibre ports that support long-term transmission. In addition, the four-port small form-factor pluggable (SFP) design allows users to make flexible changes. With full support of the Ethernet Redundancy protocol and multiple spanning tree protocol (MSTP), this switch can protect mission-critical applications from network interruptions or temporary malfunctions with its fast recovery technology. The operating temperature range is from −40 to 70 °C. Go to www.oring-networking.com.
Most advanced entry-level thermal imaging cameras
The new FLIR (www.flir.com) Ex-Series cameras are true thermal imaging devices, not simply taking spot temperature measurements or using blended techniques. Entry-level, they have many advanced features. Multispectral dynamic imaging (MSX) technology provides exceptional real-time quality for pin-sharp thermal images, quicker target orientation and clean reports. An integral visual camera eases target association and inspection, while multi-spectral imaging can be applied to the stored visual and thermal JPEG images. Analysis tools are standard. Applications include troubleshooting electrical, mechanical and under-floor heating faults.
Twenty-year warranty for special pipework
The Teseo modular aluminium pipework system for the delivery transfer of compressed air, inert gases, fluids and vacuum is now covered by a 20-year warranty. This is claimed to be the longest product assurance available in the manufacturing pipework business sector. The warranty covers defects in the materials of aluminium pipes and fittings in its modular pipework systems. System assembly of this special pipework needs no threading, welding or painting and the four flat surfaces enables easy and safe fixing. Perfect Dual O-ring sealing eliminates air leaks reducing wasteful energy costs. For more information, call 0870 167 2150 or email
