HIV/AIDS continues to be a significant public health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. Despite advancements in prevention, treatment, and care, barriers such as stigma, discrimination, and a lack of awareness still pose challenges. 1 World AIDS Day, celebrated every December 1st, established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988, aims to increase awareness, and promote prevention, treatment, and care for HIV/AIDS. In 2022, World AIDS Day celebrated its 35th anniversary with the theme “End Inequalities, End AIDS.” 2
The public interest in HIV/AIDS can be measured using data from Internet searches for information about this condition. Google Trends is an online data exploration tool that provides real-time search data from Google and can be used to measure the impact of health awareness campaigns, detect outbreaks early, and conduct surveillance in public health.3,4 The tool determines the relative search volume (RSV) of a particular search term or topic of interest, assigning a value between 0 and 100.
Therefore, we performed an analysis using Google Trends with the aim to assess the impact of World AIDS Day 2022, celebrated on 1 December 2022, using the terms “HIV” and “AIDS” as main operators to identify searches related to this disease worldwide during 2021 and 2022. The mean difference in RSVs with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was estimated. p values were calculated using the t-test. All statistical analyses were performed using Stata/IC 14.0.
A total of 1,235,657 HIV/AIDS-related searches worldwide were identified from 1 January 2022, to 31 December 2022. Our analysis showed that the global interest in HIV/AIDS fluctuated throughout the year, with the highest interest observed in December 2022. The peak in search volume occurred on December 1st, the day of the event, and was followed by a gradual decline in search volume in the following weeks. Additionally, we observed a significant increase in the global RSV for the search term “HIV/AIDS” during the week of World AIDS Day 2022 compared with the same week in 2021, with a mean difference in RSVs of 13.8 (95% CI: 10.7–16.8, p < .001).
Regarding geographic distribution, we found the highest HIV/AIDS interest in countries with high HIV prevalence rates, such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, and Kenya. We also observed a significant increase in countries with relatively low HIV prevalence rates, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, on World AIDS Day (Figure 1). These findings suggest that World AIDS Day remains an effective platform for raising global awareness of HIV/AIDS and that it leads to increased online interest in the disease and related health information-seeking behaviors worldwide. Our study highlights the continued importance of prioritizing HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care efforts in countries with high HIV prevalence rates. It also emphasizes the need for continued investment in public health initiatives to address the global HIV/AIDS epidemic and achieve the goal of ending AIDS by 2030. Public health organizations and healthcare providers need to leverage this increased interest in providing accurate and reliable information on HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and treatment.
In conclusion, our study supports the effectiveness of World AIDS Day in raising awareness and promoting HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care worldwide. By analyzing the impact of this event on global online interest in HIV/AIDS, our study provides valuable insights for public health organizations and healthcare providers to address the ongoing challenges associated with the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.
