Strike action to save the life of a plant is followed by its ‘honourable death’: the conflict at AEG in Nuremberg

In early 2006, the workers of the Electrolux AEG factory in Nuremberg went on strike against the relocation of production to eastern Europe. The 43-day strike received a huge amount of support and solidarity at regional, national and international level. In the end, the union agreed to a compromise, obtaining relatively high severance payments, but consenting to the closure of the plant. This article retraces the development of the conflict, analyses the ‘resources of solidarity’ and tries to evaluate its outcome in a regional and international perspective.

Au début de l'année 2006, les travailleurs de l'usine Electrolux AEG à Nuremberg se sont mis en grève contre la délocalisation de la production vers l'Europe de l'Est. Le mouvement de grève de 43 jours a suscité la solidarité et a été largement soutenu au niveau régional, national et international. Finalement, le syndicat a accepté un compromis par lequel l'entreprise s'est engagée à payer des indemnités élevées de rupture de contrat, le syndicat consentant à la fermeture de l'usine. Le présent article retrace l'historique du conflit, analyse les “ressources de la solidarité” et tente d'en évaluer l'aboutissement dans une perspective régionale et internationale.

Anfang 2006 traten die Beschäftigten des Electrolux/AEG-Werks in Nürnberg gegen die Produktionsverlagerung nach Osteuropa in den Streik. Der 43-tägige Arbeitskampf erhielt massive Unterstützung und Solidarität auf regionaler, nationaler und internationaler Ebene. Zum Schluss willigte die Gewerkschaft in einen Kompromiss ein, mit dem sie relativ hohe Abfindungszahlungen erzielen konnte und dafür der Schließung des Werks zustimmte. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Entwicklung des Konflikts, analysiert die ‘Solidaritätsressourcen’ und versucht, sein Ergebnis in einer regionalen und internationalen Perspektive zu bewerten.
