Abstract

We are excited to bring you our 2013 special issue of the Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies (JLOS). This issue of the journal emerges from a partnership between the Midwest Academy of Management and the initial evolvement of its journal, Current Issues in Management, to our current responsibility for editing an annual issue of JLOS. We are proud of our affiliation with JLOS and its status as the official journal of the Midwest Academy of Management, and the journal’s publication by Sage Publications. The annual Midwest Academy’s special issues of JLOS do not generally have a specific theme, focusing instead on “current issues” in the field of management.
This year’s issue has four articles that examine factors relating to leader–member exchange, two of which provide a conceptual model for examining leadership. Searle and Barbuto propose a multilevel framework for bridging micro and macro levels of positive behavior with leadership, whereas Haver, Akerjordet, and Furunes examine the implications of emotional regulation for leadership. The other two articles look at the impact of intervening variables on leadership. Philipp and Lopez investigate the moderating role of ethical leadership on the relationship between employee psychological contracts, commitment, and citizenship behavior. Joo and Lim explore the mediating role of psychological empowerment on the relationship between transformation leadership and career satisfaction.
Our issue also features two other articles that examine senior management issues. Atinc, Kroll, and Walters investigate the impact of academicians as directors, whereas Klein and Salk take a qualitative look at presidential succession planning in private higher education.
Finally, our issue concludes with two articles that examine contemporary issues of conflict: the dynamics of work–school interface by Wyland, Lester, Mone, and Winkel, and a look at how technology has created a new type of workplace conflict in the form of cyberloafing, by Jia, Jia, and Karau.
