Abstract

Welcome to the third issue of 2025, and I hope that you find this edition a good mix of papers for you all to enjoy. The abstracts from the successful Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) at Coventry in December 2024 have been included in this edition Ultrasound.
The editorial team and I have been working very hard to manage the submissions to the journal. We have had a diverse number of manuscripts currently under review. In this issue, I am pleased to offer you all an exciting mix of a review paper, original research papers, a case report and a pictorial essay.
The range of topics in this edition include: reports of triple ectopic with literature review of incidence, risk factors, and management of recurrent ectopic pregnancies; the relationship between brachial arterial flow rates and autogenous arteriovenous fistulae (AVFs) maturity in diabetic patients with end-stage renal failure; a randomised controlled trial assessing transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS)-measured cervical length versus a modified Bishop score; review of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) in the assessment of community-acquired pneumonia in ambulant paediatric patients; a pictorial review looking at groyne ultrasound; and finally a paper highlighting the variable imaging appearances and diagnostic challenges in assessing pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (NETs).
The first publication in this issue is from a team Grimsby, United Kingdom (UK) present their findings in cases of recurrent ectopic pregnancies with an exploration of the current literature. They present two case examples followed with supporting evidence from their review of the literature exploring risk factors, incidence, and potential preventable strategies for recurrent multiple ectopic pregnancies.
A team from Indonesia presents their research on the relationship between postanastomosis brachial artery flow rate and brachiocephalic AVF access maturity in end-stage kidney disease patients with diabetes mellitus. The team suggests that post-anastomosis brachial artery flow volume can be a valuable parameter to predict brachiocephalic AVF maturity. It as the possibility for use as an alternative to draining vein volume flow.
A group of researchers from Nigeria presents their method to compare cervical length measured by TVUS and the Bishop score for preinduction cervical assessment at term. Their outcomes suggest that when skills and facilities are available, preinduction TVUS cervical length assessment may complement or be an alternative to traditional Bishop scores.
Teams from Birmingham and Oxford in the UK demonstrate that PoCUS lung assessment has high sensitivity but lower specificity to diagnose acute pneumonia in children compared to chest radiographs.
A team from Leeds in the United Kingdom presents a well-written pictorial review demonstrating the complexity and challenges of the assessment of the groyne. The authors deftly identify how ultrasound practitioners must develop a methodical approach, a good knowledge of normal anatomy and pathologies, and a comprehensive understanding of the various types of groyne abnormalities in order to undertake a thorough ultrasound assessment of this commonly assessed area.
The final offering in this edition is a collection of the poster and oral presentation abstracts from the 55th ASM of BMUS which took place between the 10th and 12th December 2024 at Coventry Building Society Arena in the United Kingdom.
