Paper 1: A Survey of Marine Diesel Propulsion Machinery

The present supremacy of the direct-drive diesel engine for ship propulsion is illustrated statistically and this is followed by a consideration of factors peculiar to marine propulsion machinery. The principal technical factors of modern diesel propulsion machinery are then described and the lines along which development is likely to take place are discussed. Consideration is also given to the alternative forms of propulsion system which have been advocated in recent years and some conclusions are hazarded regarding future prospects.
