Paper 1: Explosive Hydrodynamic Extrusion: Pressures Generated and Other Phenomena

The results of experiments carried out into the extrusion of aluminium and copper billets using an explosively activated extrusion tool described elsewhere (1)† are presented and discussed.

Pressure and high-speed ciné records of the process are included, along with photographs of typical extruded billets. The existence of two distinct phases in the displacement-time history of the extruding billets is established.

Further work is described in which the billet was extruded into an oil-filled tube fitted with a small bleed hole, in an attempt to control the rate of extrusion.
