Paper 12: Review of a Modern Marine Boiler

In recent years the operating conditions and power requirements of ships have led to rapid developments in marine boiler design. Up to 1949 steam pressures and temperatures had been fairly moderate. Since then steam temperatures and pressures have gradually increased and now the majority of modern boilers are operating at 850 lb and 950°F. In addition to the changes in steam conditions the development of the large tanker and fast container ship and the requirements of passenger liners have led to considerable changes in boiler design. The object of this paper will be to outline the development of marine boilers over the years and to indicate the reasons that have led to the changes illustrated and to comment on the type of boiler that will be coming into operation in the 1970s.
