This paper reviews post-war progress in evaluating the heat transfer performance of the single-phase and evaporative systems proposed for liquid-cooling gas turbine rotor blades. Laboratory investigations of the heat transfer processes are considered in detail, particular attention being given to the open and closed thermosyphon systems of cooling. Where relevant investigations of experimental turbines have been reported these are considered also but it is in this area—the practical application of liquid cooling—that the principal gaps in knowledge lie.
