Abstract
The results obtained by students on an honours degree course in examinations taken at the end of each year of the course are investigated to estimate their value as predictors of performance in comparable examinations taken in the following year of the course. The significance of the predictive value of examination results with reference to their use as occupational qualifications is discussed. It is suggested that the validity of qualifying examinations would be enhanced by a shift of emphasis from assessment of knowledge and techniques of the subjects of study towards assessment of those abilities and factors of personality of the candidates which contribute highly to success in the appropriate occupation.
