Abstract
The development of modern diesel engines is moving towards increased power per unit of displacement, lower engine weight, wider speed range, better fuel economy and lower noise and pollution levels. Due to these trends Friedmann and Maier have developed a new injection system, the unit injector, (Figs 1 and 2). This paper deals with the development of the unit injector, its special features and its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with conventional in-line pumps.
