Abstract
The paper considers the conditions for the purely elastic contact of rough surfaces and shows that by considering the effect of the truncation of the asperity distribution, such elastic contact is greater at low nominal pressures than has been hitherto recognized. Experimental studies to define the limits of purely elastic contact confirm the theoretical predictions. It is further shown that purely elastic contact may be obtained up to loads of some 10 000 N/mm2 by using ceramic coatings of titanium nitride deposited by the plasma assisted vapour deposition process.
