Abstract

On behalf of the ISEM 2022 Organizing Committee, we are proud to publish selected contributions presented at the 20th International Symposium on Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics (ISEM 2022) that was held in June 2022 at Thessaloniki-Greece. Initially the Symposium was planned for June 2021 but due to COVID-19 travel restrictions that was not possible.
Even at the period in which we had to make the decision of the conference to be held on site, virtually, or postponed, overseas travels were not completely free. At the end, the local organizing committee proposed to the international steering committee that the conference was held virtually. The trip which started in 1988 in Japan will hopefully continue to offer the opportunity for specialists to meet, exchange ideas, present new knowledge, and make strong friendships. Thessaloniki’s conference was the necessary bridge to overcome pandemic’s problem and to renew our appointment at the origin of the Symposium in Japan in 2023.
The first ISEM took place in Japan in 1988 and, since then, the Symposium series have continued to grow in numbers, significance, and international renown and respect, wherever their location, including Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, the USA, China, and Canada. We are honored, therefore, to pursue what has become a well-established tradition of presenting leading research and ideas in the area of applied electromagnetics and mechanics.
For ISEM 2022, 215 contributions were submitted to the editorial board, of which 162 were accepted for presentation and finally 129 were included in the program, authors originating from 16 countries. For this special issue of the International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, the editorial committee received 84 extended papers and after a painstaking review by the referees, 63 have been accepted for publication.
Many people contributed to the success of ISEM 2022. We would especially like to thank members of the local organizing committee, people of the organizing agent Symvoli who worked hard to make the Symposium a success story, and the ISEM International Steering Committee, chaired by Toshiyuki Takagi who were very helpful, providing us with valuable information and advice.
We would like also to thank Antonello Tamburrino, Editor-in-Chief of IJAEM, and Gabriela Ricci, IOS Press Associate Publisher, for their valuable assistance and rapid response to our many questions, leading thus to the smooth arrangement of this special issue. Lastly, we are grateful to all our colleagues who helped us as reviewers and specially to track chairs Nikolaos Kantartzis, Traianos Yioultsis, Ioannis Rekanos from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), and Theodoros Zygiridis from the University of Western Macedonia (UOWM).
