Geography and computers (geomatics) in a statistical environment

The use of computers for providing geographical support to survey operations has increased dramatically with the introduction of geographic Information Systems. In this paper we review the application of such systems at Statistics Canada in support of the Canadian national statistical program. Current research efforts are described, including plans to extend cooperation to the international level in order to harmonize the geographical concepts used in statistics, and to enable international comparisons of data and information.
