The Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences-owned research journal can trace its origin to the publication of 'Palaeobotany in India' in 1932 by Professor Birbal Sahni, as a prelude to the publication of a regular science Journal on palaeobotany. The journal was named "The Palaeobotanist".
The first volume of the Institute's journal, dedicated to Prof. Sahni, appeared in 1952 as the Birbal Sahni Memorial Volume. In the beginning, only one issue was taken out every year. However, with the increase in contributions from the Institute and abroad, two numbers per year were published from 1956 and three per year from 1962.
The Palaeobotanist published original articles on all aspects of palaeobotany and biostratigraphy, including comments on previous articles, replies, and palaeontological and taxonomic notes and research communications of regional and international interest. All plant groups and aspects of living botany having bearing on palaeobotany, including plant micro- and macro-fossils and plant-animal relationships, were published.
The Palaeobotanist was rechristened as The Journal of Palaeosciences (with its first volume to be published in this new name in 2021), and is open to research papers on palaeobiodiversity, including flora and fauna, palaeoenvironmental, palaeoecological, palaeoclimatic, and palaeogeographic themes, distributed over the entire geological time scales right from the pre-Cambrian to the Quaternary (i.e., recent). The contemporary environmental concerns and issues like sea-level changes, flooding, extreme weather patterns, heatwaves, and drought, along with changes in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services, fall within the scope of the journal. Original articles relevant to coal and petroleum geology and archaeology are also accepted. Formats include original articles, reviews, short communications, and special issues.
The Journal was published under its previous title from 1952 to 2021, along with the corresponding ISSN details.
From 2022 onward, the journal has been published under a new title with a newly assigned ISSN. Consequently, certain changes may be observed in the online PDF versions of the articles. Specifically, PDFs published up to Volume 71, Issue 2 (Later 2022) retain the former journal title and print ISSN, whereas articles published from Volume 72, Issue 1(Early 2023) onwards reflect the new journal title and electronic ISSN.
