Abstract
You Poor Thing
You poor thing.
All your patients are dying,
And most will be gone sooner than you think.
You poor thing.
The caregivers are crying and shouting,
And their beating hearts are bleeding.
You poor thing.
Your team looks at you for guidance,
But all you can feel are your eyes stinging.
You poor thing.
“I can't imagine how hard your work is.”
Let me give you a hug and continue to ignore the dying part of living.
You poor thing.
Your colleagues expect you to end suffering,
But they think all you do is hand-holding.
You lucky thing.
Your patients are dying,
But everyone around is smiling.
You lucky thing.
Students and peers try to peek in,
And you educate, inspire, and teach them life's meaning.
You lucky thing.
Death is approaching,
But this is not something unsettling.
You lucky thing.
They think all you do is hand-holding,
But you show them that there is nothing more soothing.
