European pension funds and socially responsible investment

The concept of socially responsible investment (SRI), which states that pension funds should not only get a good return on their investment but also use their influence over companies to increase social and economic welfare, has gained ground in the past decade. This article provides an overview of European pension funds and SRI, focusing on the implications for trade unions. It describes the European pension fund landscape, surveys national and international SRI initiatives and looks at SRI policies among the largest European pension funds. For trade unions, the current state of SRI raises important questions: (i) how can the monitoring of company behaviour be improved, particularly in areas of core concern for trade unions and their members; (ii) how can SRI ‘best practice’ be diffused to more pension funds and to other types of financial investors; and (iii) to what extent is there a conflict between SRI and maximizing financial returns and, if there is a conflict, how can this conflict be resolved? The article discusses these problems and possible solutions.

La dernière décennie a vu le succès croissant du concept d’investissement socialement responsable (ISR), qui veut que les fonds de pension non seulement offrent un bon rendement sur l’investissement, mais aussi qu’ils utilisent leur influence sur les entreprises pour accroître le bien-être économique et social. Cet article offre un aperçu des fonds de pension européens et de l’ISR, en se focalisant sur les implications pour les syndicats. Il décrit le paysage européen des fonds de pension, il offre un aperçu des initiatives nationales et internationales en matière d’ISR, et il examine les politiques d’ISR au sein des plus importants fonds européens de pension. Pour les syndicats, la situation actuelle en matière d’ISR pose des questions importantes: comment peut-on améliorer le contrôle du comportement de l’entreprise, en particulier dans des domaines essentiels pour les syndicats et leurs affiliés? Comment peut-on diffuser les meilleures pratiques d’ISR auprès d’autres fonds de pension et d’autres types d’investisseurs financiers? Dans quelle mesure existe-t-il un conflit entre l’IRS et la maximalisation des rendements financiers et, si ce conflit est réel, comment le résoudre? L’article discute de ces problèmes et des solutions possibles.

Das Konzept sozial verantwortlicher Investitionen (SRI), wonach Pensionsfonds nicht nur eine hohe Rendite erzielen, sondern durch ihren Einfluss auf die Unternehmen auch das soziale und wirtschaftliche Wohlergehen fördern sollen, hat sich in den letzen zehn Jahren weiter verbreitet. Dieser Beitrag liefert eine Übersicht über europäische Pensionsfonds und sozial verantwortliche Investitionen und erläutert ihre Folgen für die Gewerkschaften. Er beschreibt die Bandbreite der europäischen Pensionsfonds und befasst sich mit nationalen und internationalen SRI-Initiativen sowie mit SRI-Strategien der größten europäischen Pensionsfonds. Für die Gewerkschaften ergeben sich angesichts der aktuellen Situation sozial verantwortlicher Investitionen wichtige Fragen: (i) Wie lässt sich das Unternehmensverhalten insbesondere in Bereichen, die für Gewerkschaften und ihre Mitglieder von besonderem Interesse sind, besser überwachen? (ii) Wie lassen sich ,,bewährte Verfahren ‘‘im Bereich SRI auf mehr Pensionsfonds und auf andere Finanzinvestoren übertragen? (iii) Inwieweit besteht ein Konflikt zwischen SRI und dem Streben nach größtmöglichen finanziellen Erträgen, und falls ein solcher besteht, wie kann er gelöst werden? Der Beitrag erörtert diese Probleme und mögliche Lösungen.
