U.S. Veterans treatment courts (VTCs) serve justice-involved Veterans with behavioral health and reintegration issues. However, there is paucity of efforts examining VTC participants’ experiences and distinguishing the unique operations of VTCs. We summarize a descriptive history of a large VTC program in a major metropolitan area (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and examine the experiences of this VTC’s participants. We used content analysis to code VTC graduation proceeding transcripts with complementary content data from resources distributed by the presiding Judge to entering participants. From 2009 through 2016, 118 Veterans were graduated, averaging 9 to 12 months for completion for those with felony or non-felony charges, and blended monitoring with positive reinforcement within a three-stage program. From 62 VTC graduates across eight graduations, testimonies centered on gratitude toward the treatment team, treatment readiness, treatments received, and reintegration. As several theoretical frameworks on behavior change exist, opportunities remain to enhance the delivery of the VTC.

There is limited research investigating the relationship between dual diagnosis and drug court outcomes. The current study examines the relationship between dual diagnosis and drug court failure by specific failure type. Utilizing data from a large urban drug court in the Southwestern United States, the study finds mixed results regarding the impact of dual diagnosis on drug court failure. Specifically, while there was no evidence that dual diagnosis predicted overall success/failure, dual diagnosis significantly increased the odds of serious program failure (e.g., new offense, absconding, revocation). In contrast, dual diagnosis significantly decreased the odds of less serious failure (e.g., rule violation, relapse).

This study examined personal networks of adult male prisoners (N = 250) during a high-risk period prior to their incarceration. We present a descriptive portrait of network size, density, and relational type, and we then document the nature of ties within that network, focusing specifically on alters’ criminal involvement, criminal opportunity, and reinforcement of criminal behavior. We found that prisoners’ networks were large and dense, and that they were composed primarily of family and romantic partners. Most prisoners are not embedded in a personal network saturated with criminal influence before coming to prison. Yet, a small proportion are exposed to exceptionally negative influence, which, it is argued, may increase the risk of negative outcomes upon release if not addressed by evidence-based programs.

Generally regarded as an institution which frustrates rather than enables the process of desisting from crime, the potential for prisoners to find redemption in prison seems bleak. Despite unpromising conditions within the prison, we find strong evidence of reform and a desire to make amends among a cohort of long-term prisoners. While these prisoners were all participating in a rehabilitation program, their narratives of reform were highly individualized and situated in the context of their various experiences of long sentences. However, we report that these individualized accounts of reform were strengthened and facilitated in similar ways through interactions established via their program participation. Specifically, the program was experienced as fulfilling, empowering, and therapeutic. This functioned to reinforce participants’ sense of control, or self-mastery, increased their self-esteem, and instilled hope and confidence that an alternative moral future may be achievable. Implications for supporting desistance in the prison are discussed.

Utilizing intensive interview and observational data from inmates in one of the most overcrowded and underresourced jail in Metro Manila, Philippines, this study presents the first in-depth analysis of the factors associated with pangkat (prison gangs) and querna (nongang affiliation) membership. The results suggest that inmates join pangkats to ensure their safety and survival. In contrast, those who remain unaffiliated do so given their negative perceptions of the pangkat, sufficient access to social support, and desire to maintain their preprison identity. Furthermore, these major themes are situated within a modified general strain framework, which integrates traditional models of inmate adjustment, namely, deprivation, importation, and coping perspectives. In light of these findings, several implications for future research and policy are advanced, including the continued application of traditional criminological theories for understanding incarcerated populations and the formal integration of pangkats to jail administration given the lack of current reform strategies for addressing structural and institutional deficiencies.

This article identifies and describes a set of behavioral indicators associated with illegal drug carrying in public spaces. Through the use of focus group data, our research documents and translates the visual search techniques that veteran law enforcement and drugs experts report using in their work. Here, we catalogue these findings into 10 overarching categories, and discuss how each indicator may be incorporated into an officer’s visual search. Knowledge of these indicators, when combined with proper training and an understanding of a public space, can help law enforcement identify persons who may be carrying drugs. The ability to identify drug-carrying individuals facilitates the interdiction and apprehension of offenders, and also protects the civil rights and liberties of the law-abiding public.

In Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA), trained volunteers support an individual convicted for sexual offenses to reintegrate safely into the community. Developed in Canada, CoSA has been established in many jurisdictions with a growing number of volunteers; however, little is known about whether the training and support provided meets volunteer needs. Using a mixed-methods approach, the aim of the present research was to explore New Zealand CoSA volunteer experiences of the training and support they received and their perceptions about what contributed to the effective operation of a circle. In total, 18 volunteers took part in an interview and 23 volunteers completed a questionnaire. The findings found a mixed response to the training and support received, whereby some volunteers thought the training and support was adequate, whereas other felt the training support they received was inadequate. Findings also illustrate that adequate training, having access to a circle coordinator, selecting the right volunteers and core member, clear communication, and setting up boundaries were important factors in maintaining an effective circle. Findings are discussed in terms of implications for the training and support offered to current and future volunteers, as well as for maintaining the effectiveness of future circles.

In the United Kingdom, there is an increasing need to develop prevention programs for intimate partner violence and abuse (IPVA). However, this need has increased within a context of increasing financial pressure. Consequently, commissioners are expressing interest in models of prevention that are brief. This article first reviews the effectiveness of domestic violence (DV) prevention programs, including those from England and Wales. This article then describes the theoretical development of an emerging IPVA prevention program that combines solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) methods. The article addresses how CBT content is integrated within the SFBT approach and provides details of the intervention logic model.
